Plans for a nice holiday in the Dominican Republic are over. Cholera incident at our resort (Casa de Campo) and a colleague of my daughter-in-law who returned last week from there with cholera. We were traveling with son, daughter-in-law, her dad and stepmom, and most precious of all, our 2-year-old grandson. We adults could easily have handled the risk and taken the few precautions (bottled water only, no uncooked food, etc). But not the child. Too much concern about him touching everything - floor, doorknobs, furniture - and putting his fingers in his mouth. So I cancelled my plane reservations and now have five days with nothing planned. Not sure how I want to handle them, but there we are. I think the biggest disappointment is for my son, who planned all of this around his birthday (Feb. 21) which this year is also President's Day holiday. He's had to scramble to find another warm-climate resort at the last minute on a holiday weekend. I wish him well.
